In Australia government funded and supported institutions, and their clergy bound by doctrine and oaths of allegiance to a foreign Vatican sovereign daily act with impunity to pervert justice, minimise and cloak rape in eternal secrecy, prioritizing papal loyalty over truth, victims and national law.

The Problem of Divine Inaction in the Face of Clergy Abuse Scandals

The existence of widespread, systemic sexual abuse by clergy—particularly within religious institutions claiming divine authority—presents a formidable challenge to belief in an omnipotent, omniscient, and benevolent God, such as the Christian conception of God the Father and Jesus Christ. This challenge is a modern instantiation of the classic "problem of evil," first articulated by philosophers like Epicurus and refined by thinkers such as David Hume: If God is all-powerful (able to prevent evil), all-knowing (aware of evil), and all-good (willing to prevent evil), then why does profound suffering, especially among the innocent and vulnerable, persist unchecked? The ongoing global inquiries into clergy abuse amplify this dilemma, revealing not just human failure but a glaring absence of divine intervention or testimony, which undermines claims of absolute faith in such a deity.

The Scale of the Atrocity: Empirical Evidence from Global Inquiries

Over the past two decades, independent commissions, royal inquiries, and governmental investigations across dozens of countries have uncovered tens of thousands of cases of child sexual abuse by clergy, predominantly in the Catholic Church but also in other Christian denominations. These probes span continents, including Australia, France, Germany, the United States, Ireland, Canada, Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain, Poland, Chile, and many others, with reports estimating hundreds of thousands of victims worldwide. For instance:

These inquiries, often initiated by secular governments or independent bodies, highlight not only the abuse but also systemic cover-ups: shuffling accused priests to new parishes, silencing victims, and failing to report crimes to authorities. The United Nations has repeatedly criticized the Vatican for obstructing justice and failing to protect children, noting "persistent allegations" of non-cooperation with domestic proceedings. This is not ancient history; as of 2025, surveys indicate that a majority of U.S. Catholics view clergy abuse as an ongoing problem, not a relic of the past.

Why This Undermines Belief in a Benevolent God and Jesus

If God the Father and Jesus—portrayed in Christian scripture as protectors of the weak (e.g., Matthew 18:6: "If anyone causes one of these little ones... to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck")—exist as described, their silence and inaction amid these horrors are inexplicable. Millions of vulnerable individuals, many children, have endured rape, trauma, and lifelong denial of justice within institutions ostensibly representing divine will. Yet, no divine witness has emerged: no miraculous intervention to expose abusers, no prophetic voice to testify in courts or inquiries, no supernatural aid to heal victims or punish perpetrators. This absence is stark when contrasted with biblical accounts of God actively intervening in human affairs—parting seas, resurrecting the dead, or sending angels to deliver justice.

Theological defenses fall short:

Moreover, Jesus is depicted as a healer and advocate for the marginalized (e.g., Luke 4:18: "to proclaim freedom for the prisoners"). If He is alive and active today, as believers claim, His failure to "come forward to give witness" in these global proceedings—despite pleas from victims and investigators—erodes the foundation of faith. The facts from these inquiries deny the reality of an engaged, loving deity; instead, they point to human institutions operating without divine oversight, perpetuating harm under a veneer of holiness.

A Rational Conclusion: Skepticism Over Faith

Belief in God and Jesus requires accepting that an omnipotent being watches innocents suffer in His name without lifting a finger—neither to prevent the abuse nor to ensure justice afterward. This is not just a philosophical puzzle; the empirical reality of global scandals, documented across dozens of countries, makes faith in such a deity untenable for many. As philosopher Bertrand Russell argued, "The whole conception of God is a conception derived from the ancient oriental despotisms. It is a conception quite unworthy of free men." The evidence suggests that if a god exists, it is not the benevolent one of Christianity—or perhaps no such god exists at all, and these tragedies are the predictable result of unchecked power in flawed human systems.

This argument doesn't disprove all conceptions of divinity, but it powerfully contests absolute belief in the Christian God amid undeniable facts of inaction. If faith persists despite this, it must confront these realities head-on, not dismiss them as "tests" or "mysteries."

2023 Findings in Spain found that 0.6% of the population of Spain had been sexually abused by Roman Catholic priests and laity. Up to 50 million alive on any day who have been raped or abused by Catholic clergy &/or Catholic laity

Current world population is 8 billion - 0.6% = 48 million alive today who are likely to have been raped by Catholics globally.

"This is a matter for the church and I respect the internal judgements of the church. I don't stand outside the church and provide them with public lectures in terms of how they should behave. I've noted carefully what his Holiness has said in the United States. Obviously that was a source of great comfort and healing in the United States.
