Under s116 any action that can be described as a part of the religion no matter the purposes or harm caused to individuals, communities and the country can claim immunity on the basis of the freedom to practice a religion.
There is a growing body of evidence that the specific freedom as defined in s116 underlies the failures of governments, policing, health and more since federation that has allowed the unchecked abuse of children to exist for generations and has had a role in corrupting systems to work directly against every Australian who experiences rape or abuse.
