Once the search results appeared, the next step was simple in theory but deeply revealing in practice.
The software had identified a set of pages where the term appeared. Each entry pointed to a specific document bundle and a precise page number. For the first time, the references were no longer abstract. They were located.
When the results were examined more closely, the list resolved into a smaller group of documents that contained the most relevant references. Eleven pages.
Eleven pages scattered across different records, written at different times, by different hands, and in different contexts.
Individually, each page might appear unremarkable. A note in a hospital file. A line in a clinical summary. A brief mention within a longer narrative. But when the pages were gathered together and examined side by side, something became visible that could not easily be seen when the documents were isolated.
None of the pages contained the kind of detailed clinical assessment that normally accompanies the formal establishment of a psychiatric diagnosis. There were no structured diagnostic evaluations, no comprehensive supporting examinations, no documented process where competing explanations had been weighed and a clear conclusion reached.
Instead, the pages showed something different.
A phrase appearing here. A reference appearing there. Sometimes copied forward. Sometimes paraphrased. Sometimes simply assumed.
Seen individually, each reference seemed small. Seen together, the eleven pages told a different story: the gradual reinforcement of a label through repetition rather than through clinical verification.
The exercise of gathering those pages into a single document was therefore more than administrative. It was a form of reconstruction.
For nearly twenty years the references had been distributed across a vast archive of medical documentation. Now, placed together in sequence, they could be examined as a single body of evidence.
What they revealed was the presence of a narrative that had been allowed to repeat itself.
