Sources for A Life Between the Layers

A Life Between the Layers draws upon several different kinds of source material. Not every event described in the book is documented in the same way, and the surviving record is itself part of the story.

Sources used in developing the book may include:

personal recollection;
contemporaneous letters and correspondence;
emails and text messages;
audio recordings and transcripts;
medical and institutional records;
government and administrative records;
photographs and other surviving personal material;
newspaper and other published material;
accounts provided by other people; and
later documentary evidence used to confirm or correct names, dates and events.

Where documentary material conflicts with memory, or where different records conflict with one another, the aim is not simply to select one version and discard the others. Those differences may themselves be important and are addressed in the narrative where relevant.

Some chapters will eventually have more detailed source notes of their own. Those notes can be expanded as further material becomes available.
