This page records significant additions, corrections and publication changes to A Life Between the Layers.
29 September 2026 — Systemwide Update and Block 6 Published
A Life Between the Layers currently contains 56 published chapters, with approximately 340 individually addressable sections and approximately 118,000 words — and will continue to grow considerably larger.
Explore the Layers now provides fine-grained access from individual chapter pages. Readers can search the published book, move directly between chapters, open a curated selection of recommended sections, or browse the complete list of sections within the chapter they are reading.
Section links take the reader directly to the relevant material, with small return links providing a quick route back to the chapter's section index. Searches launched from a chapter also preserve the reader's location, allowing them to return to the chapter from which the search began.
The result is that the book no longer has to be approached only as a linear sequence of chapters. A reader can follow a subject, person, event, idea or recurring theme through the material while retaining access to the surrounding chapter and the wider book.
The upgrade includes:
- book-wide search from chapter pages
- direct access to every published chapter
- recommended entry points within each chapter
- fine-grained access to all major sections
- return navigation from individual sections
- return-to-origin navigation after searching
- consistent navigation across the upgraded chapters
The underlying purpose remains the same as the book itself: to make it possible to move between the individual event, the surrounding context and the larger patterns that become visible when the layers are examined together.
We haven't reinvented content management. We have made access to a large and growing body of material simpler, more precise and more accessible.
Explore the Layers is designed for volume. A reader does not need to understand the structure of the website before beginning. From almost anywhere in the book they can move between chapters, search the published work, browse recommended entry points, or go directly to an individual section.
Each major section can also become a precise destination in its own right. A reader can bookmark it or send its link by text, email or message, allowing another person to arrive at the exact section being discussed within seconds.
For a work of this size, that makes Explore the Layers more than a navigation system. It becomes a practical tool for bookmarking, reference, discussion, evidence-sharing and collaborative examination of the material.
The objective is simple: as the volume of content increases, finding and sharing the part that matters should not become more difficult.
24 September 2026 — Improvements
- Improved book search so chapters can now be found by chapter number, including searches such as “Chapter 51”.
- Added optional reading aids that provide definitions and additional context without interrupting the main narrative.
22 September 2026 — Fifty Chapters
- Today A Life Between the Layers reached a milestone I had not imagined when the first chapter was published on 5 September: 50 chapters. Chapter 50, The Right to Correction, completes a three-chapter sequence examining accountability, institutional error and what should happen when the evidence establishes that a record is wrong.
- The book has grown not simply by adding memories, but by allowing memories, documents, recordings and surviving records to test and sometimes reshape the story as it develops. Reaching Chapter 50 feels less like arriving at an ending than discovering how much more there is to explore.
The history should remain. But the truth should prevail.

22 September 2026 — Support & Preservation
- A new Support & Preservation page has been added to A Life Between the Layers, outlining plans to preserve the book and its supporting historical record beyond my lifetime for survivors, researchers and future generations.
21 September 2026 — Reaching 84 Countries
- Since A Life Between the Layers was first published on 5 September 2026, the website has responded to requests originating from 84 countries.
21 September 2026 — Book-wide search added
- Readers can now search all published chapters of A Life Between the Layers. Search results show matching passages and link directly to the relevant place within each chapter. The search can be found at the top of the contents page.
18 September 2026
- Block Four, covering Chapters 31–40, is published.
15 September 2026
- Block Four, covering Chapters 31–40, is now in active development.
- The developing fourth block moves from individual events into questions of religious threat, childhood belief, coercion, evidence, freedom of thought and personal sovereignty.
- Chapter 40, Personal Sovereignty, has developed into a substantial concluding chapter examining trauma, survival responses, memory, evidence, bodily autonomy, authority and the right to remain the author of one's own life.
- A Life Between the Layers has been added to the site's Big List for a Rainy Day, providing a site-wide listing of the published chapters.
15 September 2026
- The first three publication blocks are now publicly available.
- The public edition now extends through Chapter 30 — The Tests.
- Chapters 21–30 form Block Three, continuing the account through Herbert Kemp, the hospital glass incident, conflicting records, psychiatric diagnosis, Dissociative Amnesia and the childhood experiences later described as "The Tests".
- The public contents page and chapter navigation have been updated to reflect publication through Chapter 30.
8 September 2026
- The first block of the book is publicly available.
- A second block is now in development.
- About, Contact, Updates and Sources pages have been added to the book structure.
- The contents system has been revised so that future chapters can be grouped into separate publication blocks.
